Solar thermal water heating cannot totally replace gas or electric heating but it can help to minimize the reliance on electric and gas water heating. Gas and electric water heating can help to bridge the gap in times of the year where there is not sufficient solar energy. When averaged over a year, a correctly sized solar system can provide 60%-70% of a household's hot water needs. Providing more than this is unadvisable, as too much heat will be produced in the summer. The hot water system can easily be automated so hot water is guaranteed regardless of sunlight levels.

A solar hot water system is made up of a ZLUZ solar collectors, storage tank or hot water heater, gas or electric booster, solar controller and pump. Your storage tank or hot water heater is installed on the ground (ie garage or mechanical closet) and the solar collector is installed on your roof (or used as a shade structure/awning). The system uses a solar controller and pump to transfer fluid from the tank to the solar collectors to be heated and returned to the tank. The solar controller compares the temperature of the fluid in the solar collector to the water in the tank. When the collector is hotter than the tank, the pump is switched on and the heat transfer begins.

Yes, ZLUZ can be added to an existing water heating system by using a heat exchanger that can retrofit to your water heater. Retrofit systems are not applicable for any State and Federal rebates. Simple retrofit valves can often be used to allow solar collector systems to connect to your existing cold water inlet. If your tank cannot accept the solar collector input directly, an additional storage tank can be installed.

Our acrylic impact cover minimizes this risk. The acrylic is 10x stronger than normal glass. Evacuated tubes are very strong and not easily broken, but if the worst should happen, solar tubes are very easy to replace. Although ZLUZ has the ability to operate with several broken tubes, it is recommended that broken tubes be replaced immediately to retain efficiency. Replacement tubes are available through your local distributor at a very reasonable price.

40 years ago our founder helped pioneer the wind power industry, and has been on the forefront of developing transformational, renewable energy technologies ever since. A few years ago he came up with the ZLUZ concept and our team designed and developed the prototype, went back to the drawing board with redesigns, went through rigorous testing & certifications process to bring the ZLUZ to life.

The cost of the system is largely dependent on the location, system configuration, and building materials used. The typical system will range from $8,000 - $12,000 USD. To alleviate the installation cost there is a 30% Federal Tax Credit for the costs of the system. In addition, there are local rebates and incentives that can lower the cost of the system even more.
