  • WHAT IS IT?
ZLUZ is the first ever 3 in 1 integrated skylight. That means you get natural daylight, solar hot water for a two-person household, and nighttime LED lighting.
  • IS SOLAR THERMAL WATER HEATING A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE TO GAS OR ELECTRICITY?
Solar thermal water heating cannot totally replace gas or electric heating but it can help to minimize the reliance on electric and gas water heating. Gas and electric water heating can help to bridge the gap in times of the year where there is not sufficient solar energy. When averaged over a year, a correctly sized solar system can provide 60%-70% of a household's hot water needs. Providing more than this is unadvisable, as too much heat will be produced in the summer. The hot water system can easily be automated so hot water is guaranteed regardless of sunlight levels.
  • HOW DOES THE SOLAR HEATING WORK?
A solar hot water system is made up of a ZLUZ solar collectors, storage tank or hot water heater, gas or electric booster, solar controller and pump. Your storage tank or hot water heater is installed on the ground (ie garage or mechanical closet) and the solar collector is installed on your roof (or used as a shade structure/awning). The system uses a solar controller and pump to transfer fluid from the tank to the solar collectors to be heated and returned to the tank. The solar controller compares the temperature of the fluid in the solar collector to the water in the tank. When the collector is hotter than the tank, the pump is switched on and the heat transfer begins.
  • DOES WATER HEAT UP IN THE TUBES?
There is a glycol mixture (heat transfer fluid) that circulates in a manifold that runs inside of the tubes so the fluid never comes in direct contact with the glass tubes.
  • CAN YOU CONNECT A ZLUZ DIRECTLY TO A WATER HEATING SYSTEM?
Yes, ZLUZ can be added to an existing water heating system by using a heat exchanger that can retrofit to your water heater. Retrofit systems are not applicable for any State and Federal rebates. Simple retrofit valves can often be used to allow solar collector systems to connect to your existing cold water inlet. If your tank cannot accept the solar collector input directly, an additional storage tank can be installed.
  • ARE THERE DIFFERENT COLORED LIGHTS FOR THE LED STRIP?
Yes! RGB light strips can be chosen as an upgrade option.
  • DOES THE SKYLIGHT HAVE A SHADE INCLUDED?
No, if a shade is needed it should be can be purchased separately. Smith & Noble have some nice options (we are not affiliated).
  • WHAT HAPPENS IF ONE OF THE EVACUATED TUBES IS BROKEN?
Our acrylic impact cover minimizes this risk. The acrylic is 10x stronger than normal glass. Evacuated tubes are very strong and not easily broken, but if the worst should happen, solar tubes are very easy to replace. Although ZLUZ has the ability to operate with several broken tubes, it is recommended that broken tubes be replaced immediately to retain efficiency. Replacement tubes are available through your local distributor at a very reasonable price.
  • DO YOU SELL IN OTHER STATES?
We sell everywhere in the world! Ask your local installer/distributor to check out our website or call us for more info.
  • IS THE PRODUCT CERTIFIED?
Yes, the product is SRCC & AAMA certified.
  • WHAT IS SRCC?
SRCC (Solar Rating & Certification Corporation) certification is a national rating system which provides product credibility through standardized comparisons of solar thermal product testing…and qualifies ZLUZ for potential tax credits and other solar incentive programs.
  • WHAT IS AAMA?
The ZLUZ was tested to AAMA (American Architectural Manufacturers Association) standards for wind, water, and structural. This means the ZLUZ collector has the ability to withstand heavy snow loads, strong winds, and will not leak.
  • WHAT IS THE LEAD TIME FOR DELIVERY?
Typical delivery time is 6-10 weeks depending on volume.
  • WHAT IS YOUR COMPANY NAME?
    ZONDLUZ, LLC
  • WHAT IS THE PRODUCT CALLED?
ZLUZ (is the name of the product, ZONDLUZ is the name of the company)
  • WHAT IS THE BACKSTORY OF YOUR COMPANY?
40 years ago our founder helped pioneer the wind power industry, and has been on the forefront of developing transformational, renewable energy technologies ever since. A few years ago he came up with the ZLUZ concept and our team designed and developed the prototype, went back to the drawing board with redesigns, went through rigorous testing & certifications process to bring the ZLUZ to life.
  • WHERE ARE YOU BASED?
    Santa Barbara, California
  • DOES IT COME IN MORE THAN ONE SIZE?
    Yes! We currently have two sizes: 48” x 65” 24” x 65”
  • DOES IT GENERATE ELECTRICITY?
No, ZLUZ is strictly a solar thermal collector used for domestic water heating.
  • HOW IS IT MOUNTED TO THE ROOF?
The ZLUZ can easily be deck or curb mounted.
  • IS MY HOUSE GOING TO GET HOT LIKE IT DOES WITH A REGULAR SKYLIGHT?
A typical skylight adds a good amount of heat to your home during the day. The ZLUZ’s twin-wall polycarbonate helps trap the majority of the heat in the unit to increase the efficiency of heating water and decrease the amount of heat transfer into your house. You get the sunlight without the heat!
  • WHAT COLORS DOES IT COME IN?
As Henry Ford once said “Any color, so long as it’s black.” That being said, we will be offering white by end of year.
  • CAN YOU INSTALL THE ZLUZ OUTSIDE THE HOME ON A GARDEN STRUCTURE?
Yes! The ZLUZ can be used as a skylight, shade structure and awning.
  • WHAT IS THE RETAIL COST FOR ONE UNIT?
    MSRP $2,999 USD
  • WHAT IS THE COST FOR THE ENTIRE SYSTEM, INCLUDING THE STORAGE TANK, CONTROLS AND INSTALLATION? "
The cost of the system is largely dependent on the location, system configuration, and building materials used. The typical system will range from $8,000 - $12,000 USD. To alleviate the installation cost there is a 30% Federal Tax Credit for the costs of the system. In addition, there are local rebates and incentives that can lower the cost of the system even more.
  • DO YOU SELL TO PROPERTY OWNERS DIRECTLY?
    No
  • HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO RECOUP MY INVESTMENT?
Depending on your location and current hot water usage, the annual electricity or gas saving will differ. Federal and local rebates and incentives can provide an accelerated return on your investment. Visit www.dsireusa.org for more information.
  • WILL WATER BE HEATED ON A CLOUDY DAY?
Yes, the heat output of the solar collector is reduced on overcast days but the collector will heat fluid.
  • IS ZLUZ NOTICEABLE ON MY ROOF?
Yes, the ZLUZ is visible on your roof but it is only 4” tall so it is no more visible then a typical deck-mounted skylight.
  • CAN ZLUZ BE MOUNTED ON A FLAT SURFACE?
Yes, the ZLUZ can be mounted on flat and pitched roof.
  • WILL ZLUZ BE A FIRE HAZARD DURING HOT, DRY WEATHER?"
No, The ZLUZ components are all high temperature rated and non-flammable so even during strong sunlight with the circulation pump turned off (stagnation), the system will not ignite dry material such as leaves. For added assurance the ZLUZ has been fire tested.
  • WHAT MAINTENANCE OF THE SOLAR COLLECTOR IS REQUIRED?
The ZLUZ collector should be cleaned if it gets a lot of dirt buildup so efficiency of the unit is not affected. Should a tube break it should be replaced.
